Japanese Unit 731 was a secret military unit of the Imperial Japanese Army
established in Manchuria (northeast China) during World War II. Its official
name was the “Kwantung Army Epidemic Prevention and Water Purification
Department.” In reality, however, it was a core institution engaged in
research for biological warfare (bacteriological warfare) and human
experimentation.
